Dr. Mohammed Obaidullah · 5 October 2023

This foundation course delves into products, processes, and mechanisms in the Islamic financial services industry. It offers a comprehensible explanation of core Shariah principles in Islamic finance, emphasizing product design and development that cater to both profit opportunities and Shariah compliance. Additionally, the course gives tools for assessing the Shariah-compliance of conventional financial offerings.

The course is structured into five modules:

  1. Overview of the Islamic Financial System: Introduces the blueprint of the Islamic financial structure, emphasizing the ethics, efficiency, and distinct norms, including the prohibition of riba and gharar.
  2. Islamic Commercial Banking: Explores commercial banking products, contrasting conventional practices with Shariah-compliant alternatives. It sheds light on fund mobilization via deposit-related products and elaborates on diverse financing solutions.
  3. Islamic Insurance: Reviews conventional insurance practices versus their Shariah-compliant counterparts, detailing Islamic insurance products based on tabarru, mudaraba, and wakala.
  4. Islamic Investment Banking and Financial Engineering: Begins with a comparison of conventional investment banking to its Islamic counterpart. It includes venture financing, securities creation, and risk management products based on derivatives.
  5. Fund Management and Project Finance: Addresses conventional methods of fund management like mutual funds and unit trusts against their Islamic alternatives. The module also touches on project finance, contrasting conventional structures with Islamic-compliant methods.
