Islamic Insurance (Takaful)

This course provides an in-depth exploration of Takaful, the Islamic cooperative insurance model, distinctively rooted in Shariah principles. As an alternative to conventional insurance, Takaful operates on a framework of shared responsibility, mutual assistance, and ethical investment, reflecting the core Islamic values of equity, fairness, and transparency.

Throughout this 14-week course, students will delve into the origins and historical development of Takaful, gaining insights into its foundational principles and the socio-economic forces that have shaped its evolution. The course will thoroughly compare and contrast Takaful with traditional insurance practices, highlighting the ethical considerations and operational models that set Takaful apart.

Key areas of focus include the detailed examination of Takaful’s legal and regulatory environment, exploring how different jurisdictions interpret and integrate Takaful into their financial landscapes. Additionally, students will study the financial management strategies pivotal to Takaful operations, including fund management, revenue generation, and risk assessment, all within the bounds of Shariah compliance.

Practical applications of Takaful in both general and family spheres will be covered, offering students a comprehensive understanding of claims processes, beneficiary management, and the role of intermediaries. This course aims to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing them for careers in Islamic finance or enhancing their current professional expertise in this growing field.
