Awqaf sustainably operates based on principles like perpetuity, inalienability, and irrevocability. The waqf system is a robust method to yield sustainable resources, dedicating assets to public benefits. Yet, its potential as a funding source for Muslim societies’ development is underutilized.

This is the first in the two-part (6-credits) course on management of waqf (Islamic endowment) and focuses on role of waqf in comprehensive human development in the twin frameworks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Objectives (Maqasid) of Shariah (MaS).

Each of the courses is equivalent to a 3-credit course taught at universities, spans fourteen (14) topics, delving into how waqf can provide a sustainable framework for achieving development policy goals in the field of poverty alleviation, freedom from hunger, provision of affordable and quality education, healthcare, energy, water and sanitation while take care of issues of gender equality, bringing about innovation-driven inclusive and equitable growth. It also covers the role of waqf in ensuring environmental and climate change protection, conservation of natural resources, building peaceful and inclusive societies with strong institutions in alignment with the goals and spirit of Shariah.

Highlights of the Course:

  • Waqf’s role in human development according to Shariah objectives (Maqasid), linking specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Shariah sources and objectives.
  • Waqf-based models for poverty alleviation, fighting hunder, provision of education, healthcare, clean energy, water, sanitation and other development needs for humanity
  • Role of waqf in environment protection, conservation of resources
  • Waqf-based models for bringing about inclusive and equitable growth with distribution of wealth and incomes
  • Role of waqf in affordable, inclusive, resilient and peaceful societies, creating strong institutions and global partnerships.
